SNOW ploughs are in action the Clare and Haverhill areas of Suffolk for the firs time in years - tackling the heaviest falls in the county.
Suffolk County Council chiefs said more than six inches of snow had fallen in the Clare area making driving conditions the most treacherous in the county.
However, a spokesman said gritters had been out in force through the night building up a layer of salt on many roads in a bid to protect motorists. He said many gritters in the Haverhill area had been fitted with snow ploughs for the first time in a number of years.
He advised drivers to make only essential journeys and to pack water supplies and blankets.
