WAR veterans met yesterdayto discuss the upcoming General Election with one of the candidates for Colchester.

Members of the town's Royal British Legion Club gathered at the Drury Arms in Layer Road, near to the Garrison, to put questions to the Conservative contender for the town, Kevin Bentley.

Mr Bentley was joined by the Nicholas Soames, a former Armed Forces Minister and member of the Tory shadow cabinet before Parliament was dissolved.

Mr Bentley said: "Mr Soames was very keen to see the Garrison and was here to support me as well - he is a former soldier himself and had visited before when he was the Armed Forces Minister.

"I am very proud of our Army connections, they have been part of our town and our lives for almost 2,000 years.

"When I have spoken to people they are concerned about how the Army is being treated, the Government has worked the Army too hard."

Mr Soames also discussed the new Garrison development which is under construction and the regeneration projects for the town.
