A POSTMAN was forced to make the most unusual delivery of his career - by helping his wife give birth when she went into labour.

Mark Law, 37, helped his wife Tracey, 35, as she gave birth to little Milly when she went into labour the evening before the baby was due.

Mrs Law, a company administrator, started having pains around 7.30pm and the hospital was called, but the Braintree couple were reassured that they would not have to worry immediately.

But when, at around 9pm, Mrs Law shouted down that she could feel the baby's head, it became obvious to Mr Law that baby Milly would be born at home, and so he leapt into action.

The Braintree postman said: “It was a natural reaction to help, you just want to protect your loved ones.

“Tracey was in too much pain to lay back, so I made her as comfy as I could.

“Milly was in a hurry to come out and I didn't have to do much - it was almost as easy as my usual deliveries.”

Milly was born in the bathroom around 9.30pm and weighed 6lb 7oz.

Mrs Law said of her experience: “It was weird, at first I kept thinking I don't want to be here.”

She added: “After we were so surprised we didn't check to see if we'd had a boy or girl at first.”

She said that despite the fact her first child, Elliot, now four, had a complicated labour, the atmosphere remained calm.

Shortly after Milly had been successfully delivered an ambulance that had been called earlier arrived.

When Mr Law was offered the chance to cut the umbilical cord he said: “I might as well, and finish the job properly.”

The couple said they wanted to thank the emergency services, who they felt did a great job.

Mrs Law laughed: “One woman from the ambulance joked 'Wouldn't it be funny if your husband was a postman'. And I replied 'He is'.”

Mother and baby spent last Thursday night in St John's Hospital, Chelmsford, and returned home to Braintree the following day.
