A Suffolk hospice has boosted its support for children and young adults after receiving donations from three local organisations.

St Elizabeth Hospice, which looks after over 2000 people every year, has used the funding to invest in a child-friendly therapy room, with age appropriate toys, games and equipment to offer a welcoming space for children aged five to 18 dealing with a family illness or loss.

The money will also cover free specialist emotional support and bereavement counselling to vulnerable young people.

Children’s Counsellor, Rob Ilett said: “The children’s room will make a huge difference in helping us support young people in Suffolk. Getting appropriate and timely emotional and bereavement support is crucial. If children are unable to process the distressing emotions associated with serious illness and death, they are at greater risk of developing mental health issues later in life.

“We give children the opportunity to think and talk about their emotions, and help them understand that what they are feeling is normal. We’re really grateful for the funding to improve our facilities for children through what may be the most difficult time in their lives.”
