A decision is expected to made on the start of a major housing development on the edges of a Suffolk town.
Mid Suffolk District Council will meet tomorrow to discuss the proposals for Chilton Leys which is likely to see 800 homes built in Stowmarket.
The Archaeological Service Conservation Team of Suffolk County Council has recommended that if permission is granted for the first phase - some 200 homes - then work should be done to understand the significance of any artefacts found.
A letter sent to Mid Suffolk from the team said: “Finds have included Prehistoric pits, Roman settlement features and a kiln, Saxon burials and a possible sunken-featured building.
“The proposed development would cause significant ground disturbance that has potential to damage the archaeological deposits and below ground heritage assets that are known to exist across the site.”
Mid Suffolk is due to meet at 2pm tomorrow to discuss the first phase which includes initial plans for a school.
