SPEED limit signs should be installed to slow down motorists on a road used by schoolchildren, it has been claimed.

William Miller, 81, of Thackeray Grove, Stowmarket, said vehicles were exceeding the speed limit in Chilton Way because there were no signs.

The road is busy with traffic going to and from the A14 and is used by families and children to get to Stowmarket High School, nurseries and Stowmarket Rugby Club.

“We have not got the 30mph limit signs,” Mr Miller said. “We have appealed for that many times.”

“People should know the speed limit but I’m not quite sure how that works without the signs. People are going quicker and quicker – everybody is coming off the roundabout and going off to Onehouse or other areas.

“If there are 30mph signs, anyone doing more than 30 is breaking the law. What would two signs cost? I even said I would put the signs up. There’s an amount of danger and as traffic increases the danger will increase.”

Stowmarket town councillor Gary Green said police had been patrolling with speed guns. He said “cut your speed” signs could be purchased for the street from his councillor’s budget.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said: “There are 30mph speed limit signs on the approach to Chilton Way. The street lights, central islands and ‘kill your speed’ posters also reinforce the appropriate speed limit for the road.

“In addition, there are warning signs reminding drivers to reduce their speed in the vicinity of the schools and alerting them to the presence of schoolchildren on the street.”
