A TOWN council has outlined plans to spend more than £130,000 on projects for the forthcoming financial year.

Stowmarket Town Council would spend the money on replacing the Christmas lights, carrying out repair work to the market town clock and improving the Community Centre.Included in the proposals are £65,000 of spending from the council’s reserves to help fund some of the projects.

Speaking at a council meeting on Wednesday night, town clerk David Blackburn said that the council’s reserves were at a “respectable level”. Councillor Keith Scarff said the proposals were “a sensible and prudent use of the reserves and show residents, businesses and visitors that we mean business in the town.”

The spending for 2013/14 will also go to improve the play areas in Glemsford Road, Chilton Fields and Lindsey Way.

Councillor Lesley Mayes described the improvements to the Glemsford Road play area as exciting. She said: “It’s a very difficult play area with a mound in the middle.”

Mr Blackburn said: “Replacing the Christmas lights is something borne out of necessity.

“They are 35 years old. They could let us down and we could not get the parts to repair them.”
