A walnut tree which brought joy to happy couples posing for their wedding pictures was destroyed today after being brought down by Storm Eleanor gales.

Newlyweds were often photographed under the branches of the tree, in the grounds of the historic Milton House where Stowmarket Town Council, Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice Bureau and the town’s registry office are based.

But this will no longer be the case now that the tree has been completely destroyed by tree surgeons after being brought down by the stormy weather.

Patrick Roberts, who managed to take a picture of the tree before it was cut up, said it came down in the wind at around 9am today.

Elsewhere in Suffolk, hundreds of homes were left without power earlier today as high winds hit the county.

Most households had their electricity back by noon.

Major disruption was reported in and around Ipswich today due to the closure of the Orwell Bridge.

Highways England chiefs re-opened it after 17 hours at approximately 2pm.
