A busy road in Sudbury is due to be closed for emergency repairs after a stretch of the street subsided.

A part of Newton Road will be shut for safety reasons said a spokesman from the Suffolk Highways authority.

It has meant that the East Street drainage works will not start until the work in Newton Road has been carried out.

Whilst the road closure is in place, there will be no access/egress from Chelsea Road and Ingram Wells Road, as the affected area is in the middle of the junction.

There is likely to be disruption and delays during peak times.

East Street was set to be closed for five weeks to allow workmen to install new gullies and drainage pipes.

Motorists will have to find alternative routes as East Street will be shut between Girling Street and Waldingfield Road although the road will be open where possible at weekends.

The closure will take place from Monday with the work set to help reduce the risk of flooding.

Diversionary routes will be set up southbound via Springlands Way, Melford Way and Girling Street and nortbounds via Girling Street, Newton Road and Northern Road.
