COUNCILLORS have approved repair work totalling 120,000 for a town centre car park.

Members of Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee has made the money available to upgrade Sudbury’s North Street car park.

The news comes at a time when the future management of the town’s car parks remains uncertain with Sudbury Town Council hoping to put forward a proposal that will allow it to take over their management from Babergh.

And, according to district councillor Nigel Bennett, a decision on whether the repair work should be carried out had been deferred from February while the discussions were ongoing.

“But it was decided the work must be carried out soon because the condition of the car park was deteriorating and repair work would have become increasingly expensive the longer we left it,” he added.

The resurfacing work is expected to start in January 2013 and take nine weeks to complete. It will be carried out in three phases to minimise disruption to local businesses and car park users. The committee also pledged 50,000 to improve a play area near First Avenue in the Springlands area of Sudbury.

A scheme has been developed through consultation with residents to enhance the existing facilities and add new equipment, such as an overhead runway, a multi-climber, new swings and a maze.

Mr Bennett said: “This is good news for the young families who live in the area. The funding will go towards adding play equipment to an area that has become outdated.”
