COMMUNITY groups have put forward their individual visions for Sudbury’s town centre traffic system ahead of a meeting next week to be hosted by Suffolk County Council.

The county’s highways chiefs are due to thrash out how £460,000 allocated to help ease Sudbury’s transport woes should best be spent as part of a new local transport plan.

Stakeholders including Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, the Market Town Partnership and the Babergh District Council-run Sudbury Steering Group will attend the meeting on February 28. The steering group has sent a formal submission to the county outlining what is sees as the priority projects.

Sudbury highways committee chairman Tony Platt and councillors Jan Osborne and Peter Gray will represent the town council at the forum. The council recently agreed on a list of measures it would like to see introduced, such as trials of 20mph speed zones, changes to the strategic lorry route and the possible implementation of residents’ parking permits. The Sudbury Society has also sent its proposals to the county council. The group wants the new plan to address all modes of transport within the town, including walking and cycling. Members want to see improvements to bus services and a reduction in the number of heavy goods vehicles passing through the town. The society will also push for road junctions that are potentially hazardous to pedestrians to be identified and reconfigured.
