SUFFOLK: The chances of a white Christmas in Suffolk aren’t being ruled out by forecasters who have confirmed that snow will return this week.

The weather looks set to take a turn for the worse tomorrow with temperatures due to plummet to below freezing.

It’s expected that snow will fall across the region sometime tomorrow or Friday and could then return in the days leading up until Christmas.

John Law, a forecaster for Weatherquest said: “We will see a dramatic change in temperature on Thursday.

“A cold front will move in across the county bringing with it brisk cold northerly winds followed by rain and sleet.

“Temperatures could get as low as minus five or minus six degrees Celsius on Thursday evening so we would warn drivers to watch out for ice on Friday morning.

“Over Friday and the weekend temperatures will stay around freezing point during the day and drop below it overnight.”

Mr Law added that prospects of a white Christmas happening in the region could not be ruled out completely.

He added: “The weather charts we have at the moment only run up until Christmas Eve so it’s a little early to make bold predictions.

“However, the charts show that there will be some low pressure over us on that day.

“If that mixes with cold air then it could, in theory, produce some snowfall.

“So although it’s still slightly early days we can’t fully rule out the prospect of a white Christmas in Suffolk.”

Last week forecasters at British Weather Services (BWS) claimed that snow would fall across the UK and would make the Christmas period a “living nightmare”.

Jim Dale, senior risk meteorologist from BWS said: “The heavyweight cold air over northern Europe isn’t going anywhere fast and as mild weather stretches north to Greenland, the outflow of frigid air from the northeast is set to bring us all back into the deep freezer.

“The deep winter situation we are facing up to will require everyone to be well prepared over Christmas.

“I am 90 per cent sure that we will see a Christmas run-in fraught with harshness and hazards; and the grip of winter could well hold us tight well into the New Year.”

Meanwhile, bosses at Suffolk County Council said that grit supplies were “adequate at present” and more deliveries were expected before Christmas Day.
