East Anglia is bracing for gusts of up to 50mph today as forecasters warn more high winds could hit the region at the weekend.

The strong winds are expected to hit Suffolk and Essex from 10am today although the west of the UK is set to face the brunt of the windy weather - with wind speeds of up to 90mph.

Chris Bell, forecaster at Weatherquest, said: “The most impactful thing in terms of weather today will be the wind.
“There will be an increase in the wind around 10am-11am this morning.

“We are probably looking at gusts of somewhere around 45mph but I wouldn’t rule out gusts of up to 50mph.

“This will continue from later morning through to the afternoon and tail off at around 6pm this evening.

“Technically speaking, this is a result of an area of low pressure in the north west of Scotland and some of that air from that zone is affecting us.”

Yesterday a spokesman for the Highways Agency said there were no plans to close the A14 Orwell Bridge due to the high winds.

Mr Bell said Thursday is looking blustery, with wind speeds again reaching 45mph, with a spell of rain set to hit the region in the evening.

The end of the week will be fresher, with temperatures falling from 23-24C (73.4-75.2F) on Thursday to 17-18C (62.6-64.4F) on Friday.

However, Mr Bell warned that there could be more windy weather on its way over the weekend.

“There is a lot of uncertainty about the weekend, he said.

“There is the risk for some more strong winds but there is still uncertainty over how it will look.

“I would warn that there is a chance of strong winds.”
