There was huge doubt over whether we could actually pull it off but Gareth Southgate’s boys have today ‘written their own history’ and made it through to the World Cup semi-finals.
Suffolk was behind them all the way as they beat Sweden 2-nil in Russia, securing their place in the semi-final of the World Cup for the first time since 1990.
Usually awash with blue shirts, the home of Ipswich Town was transformed into a wave of red and white as hundreds packed int he Fan Zone at Portman Road to watch Southgate’s men take on Sweden.
A huge screen and a beating sun welcomed the fans of all ages.
Drinks queues stretched across the training ground but it wasn’t enough to stop fans from throwing their cups in the air as England scored.
Among those enjoying the game were Jim Sharp, from Kesgrave, and Eoin McNamee, who had travelled up from Colchester, for the big game.
“It’s amazing. It’s a great atmosphere and a great set up,” said Mr Sharp, “It’s better than watching at home.
“It’s great to be here with everyone else.”
Mr McNamee reckoned himself to be the only Irishman in the crowd, originally hailing from Dublin, but said that he had enjoyed watching England play.
“It’s well worth getting sun burnt for,” said Mr McNamee.
Gemma Mitchell was at Gresham’s Sports and Social Club in Tuddenham Road, Ipswich for the momentous match. The atmosphere was alive as England scored their first goal early in 30 minutes in to the first half.
Then it was positively charged as Tottenham’s Dele Alli made it 2-nil early on in the second half.
Hundreds of people filled the Willow Suite at Greshams to watch the game.
Fan Paul Hassall described the atmosphere as “absolutely fantastic”.
Fellow spectator William Hunter-Rodwell said: “The match was wonderful, it was great to watch.”
In Lowestoft, Adam Howlett watched with Woody at Pleasurewood Hills. He has been speaking to fans to get their reactions - and their predictions for Wednesday night’s big game. And fans packed out the bars at Center Parcs, Elveden Forest, taking a break from the rapids and the other sporting activities to watch history in the making.
Simon Laight was watching stateside and he commented on our Facebook to say: “Suffolk boy in Suffolk, Long Island, New York loving it!”
