THE couple from Suffolk who scooped the 148million EuroMillions jackpot were named today as Adrian and Gillian Bayford.

Mr Bayford, 41, who co-owns the Suffolk Music Centre in Haverhill, and his healthcare assistant wife, 40, were named as they appeared at a press conference this morning.

The lucky pair, from the Haverhill area, have won 148,656,000 after being confirmed as the only winners of Friday’s EuroMillions draw.

Mr Bayford said he was watching the film The Bank Job on Friday before turning over to see one ticket had scooped nearly 150m.

Mr Bayford said: “Scrolling along the bottom of the screen was the news that one person had won EuroMillions but Gillian confessed that she hadn’t had time to get a ticket.

“As a joke, I also said neither had I when in fact I had five lines upstairs waiting to be checked.

“By now both of our children had woken-up so while Gillian was trying to settle them back to sleep, I went to check the numbers on my phone.

“Gradually the numbers seemed to match-up with those on my ticket and I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing!

“I rushed back and turned on the main light at which point Gillian went ballistic!

“The kids really were awake by now. I was trying to tell her that we had won the lottery and she was telling me to keep the noise down!”

The pair have been married eight years and have two young children - a daughter aged six and a four-year-old son.

The windfall has propelled them into Britain’s top 1,000 richest people, alongside the likes of the world’s wealthiest chef Jamie Oliver and former Beatle Ringo Starr, who both have fortunes estimated at around 150m.

News of the win was met with shock and excitement in Haverhill last night.

Theresa James, assistant manager at The White Hart pub in Haverhill High Street, said: “I’m quite excited for the person involved – whoever it is congratulations to them, it’s a life-changing amount of money.

“My immediate reaction was to ring around my friends to see if it was anyone I knew!”

Haverhill councillor Anne Gower described the news as “incredible”.

“I hope it brings them happiness,” she added. “It’s quite a huge burden when you win that amount of money.

“Any spin offs and publicity for the town and anything that they might want to do for the town would be brilliant. We’ve got some brilliant charities in the town.

“We have our detractors which I think are grossly unfair and we have a great sense of community.”

The ticket is UK’s second biggest lottery win behind Ayrshire couple Colin and Chris Weir, who scooped 161.6m in July 2011.

It is the second winning ticket in East Anglia within a year - Dave and Angela Dawes of Wisbech in Cambridgeshire won 101m in October.

It also means they are now among the very richest people living in or with links to Suffolk - a list which includes the likes of Bernie Ecclestone (2.5bn), Ipswich Town owner Marcus Evans (625m) and Kirsten Rausing (3.9bn).

The Haverhill couple will celebrate and reveal their plans for the future at press conference today. It’s being held at Down Hall Country House Hotel in Bishop’s Stortford.

A National Lottery spokeswoman said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the ticket-holder into our millionaires club, joining the 2,900 millionaires created by the National Lottery to date.”
