Nearly 100 groups across Suffolk and north Essex found out on Saturday if they were successful in getting their hands on part of Sport Relief’s Community Cash Fund.

The pot of £75,000 was open to local good causes as part of the national fundraising extravaganza – and the list of winners has been revealed exclusively in the East Anglia Daily Times.

Dozens of organisations from sports societies and music projects to foodbanks and lunch clubs applied for between £500 and £1,000 from the fund.

Community groups in the EADT’s circulation area with a turnover of less than £100,000 a year were eligible for the grants.

The applications were managed by the Suffolk Community Foundation who assembled a panel to decide how the money would be dished out.

And now we have published a full list of which groups have been awarded grants, how much money they’ve been given and what they will be using the money for.

Stephen Singleton, chief executive of Suffolk Community Foundation, said: “Sport Relief Community Cash has been a phenomenally successful grants programme, helping over 80 local community groups and charities across Suffolk and north Essex.

“The funding has supported a wide array of groups, including over 60s clubs, disability support organisations and youth clubs with contributions towards vital running costs as well as kick-starting new projects to expand vital local services.”

Terry Hunt, EADT editor, said: “We are delighted to have played a part in helping to reward these brilliant community groups in Suffolk and Essex.

“Each and every one of them plays such an important role in its community, and we hope that this money will help them to achieve their goals.”

The money awarded is set to be used in a variety of different ways, including helping to pay part-time staff, days out for disabled children and new equipment for clubs.

This is the first year Suffolk has got involved with the Sport Relief Community Cash Fund, which takes place every two years along with the main money-raising event.

Currently, the total for this year stands at £53,370,743, which will be used to help good causes across the world and in the UK through initiatives like the Community Cash Fund.

This year saw the first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games take place at the Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park in London and other cities.

Hundreds of thousands of people up and down the country also got running, cycling and swimming in their home towns to raise money.

The telethon broadcast live on March 21 saw a host of celebrities get involved as well.

Among them were David Walliams and Gary Linker presenting the main programme, David Beckham meeting up with Del Boy and Rodney in an Only Fools and Horses sketch and Davina McCall running, cycling and swimming from London to Edinburgh in seven days.
