Suffolk and Essex firefighters have been sent to help colleagues across the region tackle a "quickly escalating" field fire.

Crews from across the region are currently battling a 50 acre blaze off Whaddon Road in Meldreth, south of Cambridge.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue said more than 50 firefighters were on the scene, with crews from Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire assisting.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said it had sent 12 engines along with a water bowser to help.

“It’s escalated quite quickly,” a service spokesman said.

Cambridge Fire Service added: “There are multiple fires in the field area.

The fire started out in a two acre field and rapidly spread to cover more than 50.

Four Suffolk engines have also been sent to help tackle a blaze in Ickleton, Cambridgeshire.

. Gusts of wind are providing a challenge as these help the fire to spread
