A fire in a block of flats in Newmarket has prompted a massive response from emergency services.

The fire started shortly after 3pm in a first storey flat in the St James building in Icewell Hill.

There were 10 fire engines in attendance from a range of locations and police closed Exning Road, Rowley Drive and Tannersfield Way.

Emergency services were called after smoke was seen coming from a flat by residents and pumps were in attendance from Newmarket, Cambridge, Ely, Soham, Bury St Edmunds and, Mildenhall.

Ambulance crews were also in attendance.

The fire is now under control and fire fighters are currently checking the flats above and below the fire to make sure they were not damaged by the blaze.

The fire was restricted to 225 square metres on the first floor and the extent of the damage is unknown.

Crews have now been stood down but four remain at the scene to ensure that the fire has been properly put out and to check that the building is safe.

Everyone from the flats have been accounted for and there are not believed to be any casualties.

As a consequence of the fire, busses run by Stagecoast East will be diverted around Exning Road and Rowley Drive through High Street. They are warning commuters to expect long delays on their number 11 and 12 services.
