Forecasters have cast doubt on whether today will be the hottest day of the year in Suffolk.

With the country locked in the grip of a prolonged heatwave, hopes have been raised that today will see the highest temperatures so far in 2013 as sunbathers head for the hotspots.

But Chris Bell, forecaster at Weatherquest, said it was unlikely the county would follow suit.

He said the highest temperature recorded so far this year in the county was in Santon Downham on July 22, when 32.6C (90.7F) was registered.

“Today in the western parts of Suffolk we could see temperatures of around 31C (88F) or 32C (90F), but I don’t think it will be a record-breaking day,” he said.

He added in Ipswich it would be around 28C (82F) or 29C (84F) and slightly cooler around the coasts.
