Highways teams investigating parking problems outside Suffolk schools have received footage of drivers mountings verges – and will urge police to take action.

The evidence of drivers in Sprites Lane was disclosed during a meeting held to tackle the growing concerns about parking outside The Bridge School.

Road safety, police and highways officers, and representatives of The Bridge School and One sixth form college attended the meeting to find a solution to the problems.

Traffic issues around the two schools has been a concern for several years. Until recently, the problems focussed on One students parking in neighbouring streets. More recently, the problems have spread to Sprites Lane, following the expansion of The Bridge School, which is for pupils with special needs.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said the meeting heard about the efforts of The Bridge School to manage congestion.

“We have been sent footage of road users mounting the verge and we will ask the police to look out for and deal with the offending vehicles appropriately,” the spokesman added.

“Suffolk police have agreed to continue to monitor the parking along Sprites Lane and on the estate in general.

The spokesman said bus services would be co-ordinated to ensure the “students access the site in the most efficient manner.”

Separate discussions are said to be ongoing to find extra parking spaces for One students.

Christopher Hudson, who represents the Belstead Brook division at Suffolk County Council, said he was “assured” the negotiations would allow sufficient places to accommodate One students from the start of the new academic year in September.

Mr Hudson also said he welcomed news that road safety officers will liaise with One to “drive home the vital points on road safety and respect for all road users, pedestrians and hard-pressed residents in the area”.

“We all need to keep up the pressure to solve these chronic safety problems,” he added.

One’s principal Alan Whittaker said the discussions had been positive for all parties.

“Things are progressing well,” he added. “It’s really positive and what’s really encouraging is that everyone around the table are working together – it’s in all our interests.”

Suffolk police urged drivers to park “legally and responsibly” – particularly around Sprites Lane.
