A Suffolk man who stamped on an unconscious man’s head has been jailed for 15 months.

Sentencing Oliver Thompson at Ipswich Crown Court, Judge David Goodin described the attack on Adrian Flanaghan as “savage and vicious” and said it had happened because Thompson didn’t want to be seen as a wimp.

He said Mr Flanagan suffered a fractured jaw and nose and a blood clot on his ear in the attack.

Simon Gladwell, prosecuting, said shocked members of the public who witnessed the incident, which took place in Brandon in March last year, had called the police.

He said Thompson had knocked Mr Flanagan out with a punch and had then stamped on his head.

Thompson, 26, of Gas House Drive, Brandon, admitted assaulting Mr Flanaghan causing him actual bodily harm.

David Stewart for Thompson, said that six weeks before the attack Mr Flanagan had been living rough and Thompson had persuaded his grandparents to let him live in a caravan near their home.

He said Thompson and Mr Flanagan had both been drinking and Mr Flanagan had been holding a sharp instrument such as a flint.
