SUFFOLK police have admitted their officers are experiencing radio network problems – just a month after moving into their new multi-million pound council and police centre.

Suffolk police and Suffolk County Council moved some of their services to Landmark House, Whitehouse – home to 850 police and council staff – on October 5.

The majority of staff based at Ipswich Police Station in Civic Drive have moved into the four-storey building, which was jointly purchased in 2010 by Suffolk County Council and the Police Authority for just under a third of its 12million asking price. However, the Star can now reveal that some officers are experiencing difficulty hearing some of the messages sent over their radio network in part of the building.

County Policing Commander Chief Superintendent David Skevington said: “We are aware of a technical problem affecting the Airwave radio system in part of Landmark House.

“Systems staff have identified an area on part of the ground floor, where the signal is intermittently weaker than elsewhere. Tests were carried out prior to the building being occupied and operational.

“Initial tests were positive, but as with radio systems, until the area is furnished and people are operating within the building, the true nature of the coverage cannot be proven.

“Engineers are working on the problem to resolve it as soon as possible.”

Landmark House is home to police units including Criminal Justice, CID, Economic Crime and Neighbourhood Response.
