A man aged in his 70s is said to be in a critical condition following a crash on the A14 in west Suffolk this morning.

Suffolk police received reports of the collision in Bury St Edmunds, near to the on-slip at Tesco, in the westbound carriageway at around 9.15am.

A police spokesman said the westbound carriageway was closed as soon as officers arrived on the scene, followed soon after by the eastbound carriageway to allow an air ambulance to touch down.

The driver of a blue Volkswagen Golf was taken to West Suffolk Hospital by land ambulance after suffering a suspected heart attack.

The road reopened at just before 10.40am.

A volunteer critical care paramedic (CCP) from the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) charity attended the crash.

The SARS CCP worked with a team from the East Anglian Air Ambulance to treat a male patient, thought to be in his seventies, at the scene.

“The patient was later taken to hospital in a critical condition,” a spokesman said.

The East of England Ambulance Service said two ambulances, an ambulance officer, the air ambulance and a basics doctor attended.

“A man, age unknown, was taken by road to West Suffolk Hospital with a suspected cardiac arrest,” a spokesman added.
