TWO men have appeared in court in connection with allegations of historic sex crimes.

Philip John Barty, 54, of Bury Street, Stowmarket and Robert Marshall Reynolds, 77, of Main Road, Kirk Michael, Isle of Man, are accused of abusing a child during the late 1970s.

Barty, who was dressed in a light shirt with a red tie and spoke only to confirm his name and address, has been charged with raping a girl under the age of 16 between August 1978 and August 1980.

Reynolds, who was dressed in a striped shirt and cravat, is charged with three counts of rape of a girl under the age of 16 and an act of gross indecency with a girl under 14 years of age, between August 1978 and 1980. The two men, who appeared at West Suffolk Magistrates’ Court in Bury St Edmunds this morning, were told their case would be sent for trial at Ipswich Crown Court.

Both Barty and Reynolds were released on conditional bail, to attend crown court on Tuesday, January 15.
