NORMAN Tebbit has spoken of his deep sense of pride at serving with Margaret Thatcher following the former prime minister’s death this morning.
Speaking from his home in Bury St Edmunds, Lord Tebbit, who served with Baroness Thatcher between 1981 and 1987, said he also wished there was “someone like her now.”
He added: “Obviously it was a great privilege to serve in the Government with her, particularly at a time when she and President Reagan led the West to the end of the Cold War. I wish we had someone like her now.”
Writing on his blog, he added: “It is a sadness that such an immense figure of the late 20th century should have gone – but perhaps a merciful release for her, from a life which must have been increasingly empty in recent years. She did indeed change Britain for the better.”
Lord Tebbitt worked alongside Baroness Thatcher as Secretary of State for Employment in 1981 and 1983, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in 1983 and 1985 before coming party chairman in 1985 to 1987.
