The estate has been owned by the Quilter family since the late 19tvcentury. Purchased by Sir Cuthbert Quilter as part of his Bawdsey Estate, centred around Bawdsey Manor, the overall estate was assembled over a period of about 20 years. At the start of the 1900s, the estate,

much as today, would have relied upon a diversity of enterprises including the grazing of cattle and sheep on pastures and marshes with arable cropping on the uplands.

In the late 1990s substantial investment was made in the construction of two winter storage reservoirs together with pumping equipment and underground irrigation. The current owners took over the running of the estate in 1992 and, since then, have both restored and modernised it. It is now presented as a diverse rural estate combining highly productive arable land, a whole farm irrigation system together with a wealth of residential assets and traditional buildings lining the northern banks of the River Deben.
