“You are now singing with the angels.”

Those were the words last night of legendary rock star Suzi Quatro, who last month fulfilled an Ipswich handy man’s last wish to meet her.

Trevor Baker, 59, died on March 18 after a battle with an aggressive cancer, which he was told was inoperable just days into the new year.

But in a bid to fulfil Mr Baker’s last wish to meet his lifelong hero Suzi Quatro, 33-year-old daughter Tina Baker contacted the EADT and Ipswich Star, who helped to set up Suzi’s visit in February.

Suzi made the trip from Great Waltham, near Chelmsford, to spend time with the family, regaling tales of life on tour and signing memorabilia.

Mr Baker, who lived in Renfrew Road, said: “It’s amazing really, she is very down to earth. I never thought she would be in my house!”

Tina confirmed her father died peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of March 18.

Paying tribute to him, Suzi Quatro said: “It was a humbling experience for me to be able to make somebody happy just by meeting them, and what a lovely man he was. He met his end with courage, acceptance and honesty – my thoughts are with the lovely family I was also lucky to meet.

“Rest in peace, Trevor Baker, you are now singing with the angels.”

In March last year, Mr Baker was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) resulting in a series of tests and scans, before doctors delivered the news in May that he had lung cancer.

After a course of radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy, Mr Baker looked to be making progress, with his family reporting good energy levels around Christmas. But after his progress stalled in January and he struggled to continue walking, doctors delivered the crushing news that the cancer had to spread.

Tina affectionately described her father as “a stubborn old man,” and added: “It’s hard seeing that man, your dad, debilitated. He is your hero, your soulmate, your best friend.”

Mr Baker’s son Michael, 28, described his father as “determined” and “funny”. Tina added: “He is just an amazing man, and I am proud to call him my dad.”

Mr Baker is survived by wife Karen, 52, daughter Tina and son Michael, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held for Mr Baker. Anyone who knew him and would like to find out more should contact Tina on 07718 597281.
