A FOOTBALL team has been thrown out of its league and two players handed life bans following an alleged assault on a referee.

Ipswich-based side Belstead Arms has also been fined after the flashpoint that put referee Christopher Dale in hospital on Sunday.

The team's match with St Clements at King George V Playing Field, Ipswich, was abandoned after the incident, which Suffolk police are investigating.

The committee of the Select Technical Services League met on Tuesday to discuss the incident and decided to suspend the Belstead Arms, removing all this season's results, and to fine the club an undisclosed sum.

Spokesman Mark Warden said the team will not be admitted to the league next season and added two of its players had been given life bans from the league. Other local leagues have been informed.

Suffolk County FA has also launched its own investigation into the incident.
