A MOTORIST was killed last nightwhen his car crashed into a telegraph pole in Elveden.

The accident happened on the B1106 at about 5.35pm and the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

His car, a Seat Ibiza, left the road and collided with the pole, which carries electricity lines.

Another motorist suffered a broken back last night after a collision at one of the region's accident blackspots.

The woman driver was freed from her red Nissan Sunny car by firefighters after colliding with another car on the A14 at the Haughley bends.

Her car spun and struck the central reservation in the accident, which happened on the westbound carriageway at about 5.25pm.

Firefighters were called to the scene, near the Little Chef restaurant, and freed the motorist within 20 minutes.

She was taken to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds and treated for her injuries, which police said included a broken back.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy has been seriously injured following a hit-and-run accident in Newmarket.

The accident happened on Old Station Road at about 5.50pm on Tuesday when a green Nissan Bluebird collided with the teenager.

Two men in the car fled from the scene, but police subsequently arrested a 35-year-old man in Newmarket on suspicion of theft of a vehicle.

He was released from custody without charge after being questioned by officers at Bury St Edmunds Police Station yesterday.

Meanwhile, a female driver is recovering in hospital following a serious accident between two cars on the A143 at 3.10pm on Tuesday.

The 53-year-old woman, from Wattisfield, was airlifted to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds following the accident.

She suffered lower body injuries and her condition was described yesterday as “comfortable”.

A 23-year-old man from Diss, who was driving the other car involved in the collision, was taken to the hospital suffering from minor injuries, but was discharged yesterday.

Suffolk police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, in particular the female driver of a small gold or yellow hatchback.
