Suffolk is being warned to expect high winds and a significant dip in temperatures as we near the weekend, marking the start of the real autumnal weather.
East Anglia enjoyed the hottest temperatures in the UK on Monday, with the mercury hitting 26C (78.8F) in Santon Downham on the Norfolk/Suffolk border and 24C (75.2F) in Wattisham - well above the average temperature of 18C (64.4F) for this time of year.
However Richard Jones, forecaster at Weatherquest, said we should expect the current blustery conditions to worsen in coming hours while the brief warm spell will end on Thursday evening as bands of low pressure push colder weather across the country.
He said: “The maximum temperature in the UK on Monday was in Santon Downham at 26C (78.8F) but we saw temperatures of 24C to 26C across the whole region.
“Compared to the 18C (64.4F) we would normally have, this is significantly warmer.
“We have had some south-westerly winds being drawn up from the tropics and this mild wind, mixed with spells of sunshine, has caused the warm but blustery weather.”
But Mr Jones said the winds will pick up their pace later during the week, with some gusts reaching 45mph as the tail of a former hurricane reaches the UK.
“On Monday and Tuesday we have had the remnants of ex-hurricane Helene which was causing some windy weather,” he said.
“Then we have got a few areas of pressure over the west which will being in gusts getting up to 40mph later in the week.
“It is two separate areas of low pressure causing these strong winds.
“On Wednesday we could see gusts of up to 45mph.
“There may be some showers and some cloud but we will still be getting some warm air so temperatures will be into the low 20s.”
Once the winds die down, Mr Jones said the temperatures are set to plummet towards the end of the week.
He said: “The main change in weather comes on Thursday evening into Friday where we have a cold front coming through with outbreaks of rain.
“This will bring cooler conditions with temperatures in the low to mid 20s on Thursday.
Thursday is looking cloudy but dry.
“By Friday, the maximum temperatures will be 14C to 16C (57.2F to 60.8F).”
