A HIGH score in a tourism survey will not lead to complacency, a leading councillor has reassured.

Visitors to Tendring have graded the region highly for enjoyment, safety and the level of accommodation, including quality of service and value for money.

Tourism South East carried out the survey on 403 visitors at a variety of locations across Clacton, Harwich and Walton.

Although delighted by the positive outcome of the survey, Alan Goggin, Tendring District Council’s new cabinet member for tourism, said there was still work to be done.

“There is no doubt there is still some work to be done and we can definitely do better in some areas.

“However, the overriding message from this report is that we do have a good product and I am determined, along with the council’s officers, to make an even better one.”

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Mr Goggin also vowed to ensure that all those involved in the tourist industry work together and make further improvements in the new year.

He added: “We are all in this together and to benefit all. We are meeting and talking about what can be done and I am already working on a couple of ideas.

“We are now very confident that we have a good base to work from and will go forward from there. One of the issues I was concerned about from the survey is that we need to look at access for those with disabilities and that is certainly on my agenda.”

Some key points from the survey include:

n 86% said their trip enjoyment was very high or high

n 87% of visitors agree strongly or very strongly with the statement: “I feel quite safe from crime”

n Most visitors rated their accommodation as good or very good, both in terms of quality of service (81%) and in relation to value for money (79%)
