ORGANISERS of this year’s Tour de Tendring cycle race say they are expecting a bumper event this year following the triumph of stars such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy at the London Olympics.

So far more than 300 cyclists have signed up to take part in the event on May 19 which is higher than it was the same time last year.

The Tour de Tendring is one of the most popular events in the district and starts and finishes at Dovercourt Swimming Pool – taking in a wealth of picturesque countryside along the way.

There will be three circular routes – 60-mile, 20-mile and six-mile – to choose from, with a distance to suit everyone from the serious cyclist to those wanting a leisurely pedal with the family.

It is thought Britain’s growing success in cycling at national level has boosted the popularity of events such as the Tour de Tendring, which could help discover the next Sir Bradley or Victoria Pendleton.

In 2012, the event, which is organised by Tendring District Council (TDC), attracted just under 1,200 entrants from the local area and much further afield.

A host of entertainments and activities will also be on offer on the green outside Dovercourt Swimming Pool, including football and basketball freestyle sessions, skateboarding, a cheerleading competition, live music and dance performances.

Alan Goggin, TDC’s cabinet member for tourism, said the Tour de Tendring brings in a large number of people to the District and helps boost the local economy.

“We have people coming from abroad, as well as all over the country, to enjoy this popular and well-established event,” he said.

“About half the people travel for the event with the rest coming from within the district. It makes for a great day, especially if the weather is good.

“We hope that those coming to Tendring for the first time will love what they see and come back for further visits.”
