FIREFIGHTERS from Essex and Suffolk are currently battling a fire at a thatched cottage in Great Horkesley.

Eight crews are on the scene at London Road tackling the blaze which broke out at about 8pm.

The fire started on the roof of the property and firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and using three hose reel jets as they try to bring the flames under control.

Incident Commander, assistant divisional officer Danny Bruin said: “The thatched cottage measures approximately 12 x 6 metres and is well alight.

“Firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and using three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“The electricity board has been requested to isolate external and internal supplies.”

Two appliances from Colchester, one from Wivenhoe, one from Hadleigh and a further four crews are involved.

A spokeswoman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the incident is ongoing and is likely to take a few hours to extinguish.
