A well-known Suffolk pub has kept its licence after police called for a review on grounds of “serious crime and disorder” at the venue.

The Angel in Lavenham closed its doors suddenly for four days last month after an application was submitted by Suffolk police to Babergh District Council to review the premises licence.

The application was submitted after two men were attacked by a man who was carrying “prohibited and offensive weapons” on January 8.

A man in his 50s, from the Colchester area, was arrested and has been released under investigation.

The pub reopened on January 19 after owner John Raines applied for a variation on its designated premises supervisor, meaning a new name was added to allow alcohol to be served at the pub again.

Yesterday the council’s licensing sub-committee met to consider the case and it was decided the premises licence would not be suspended or revoked.

The meeting was held behind closed doors due to matters related to an ongoing police investigation.

A spokesman for Babergh District Council said: “The meeting of Babergh District Council’s licensing sub-committee considered the case of the Angel in Lavenham, after an application submitted by the chief officer of police to review the premises licence on issue to the Angel Hotel, Lavenham, on grounds of serious crime and serious disorder.

“After carefully considering the matter and the submissions of all parties it has decided to not suspend or revoke the premises licence, but has, for promotion of licensing objectives, decided to modify conditions of the licence and continue with an interim step to remove the previous designated premises supervisor, pending any appeal.”

Sam Harvey-Wade, assistant manager at the Angel, said he was pleased about the outcome of the meeting.

He said: “I don’t think it was ever in much doubt, but it’s good that it’s all done and dusted now.

“We just had to wait for the official word to say it was ok to keep going.”

The pub and hotel, based at Market Place in the centre of the village, was previously owned by celebrity chef Marco Pierre White.
