Following his first headline set last night on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, the reviews have come thick and fast for Ed Sheeran.
And other than the Independent’s underwhelming reception, the verdict is largely a good one for the 26-year-old.
The Telegraph’s five-star review summed the performance up as “a wonderful end to another wonderful festival” and compared his set to a campfire singalong with “a couple of hundred thousand friends in a singalong”.
The NME hailed the “fire in his belly” in a headline slot it described as a “triumph”, before going on to call it a masterclass in playing a huge stage.
The Guardian gave the Framlingham-based singer’s set four out of five stars, describing him as “thrillingly raw and defiantly alone”.
But it wasn’t all good reviews.
The Independent’s review awarded just two stars, calling Ed “one of the least satisfying headliners in recent memory”.
In a review written just a day after publishing a story stating why the Castle on the Hill and Shape of You hitmaker was a perfect headliner, writer Jack Shepherd said that while he played with confidence he did little to win over the naysayers, and admitted that Nile Rodgers and Chic should have headlined.
