It is a sight not often seen in Suffolk, but the Northern Lights have been captured on camera from a garden in Woolpit.

Mark Hunter, an amateur astronomer who enjoys astrophotography, captured the natural phenomenon on Sunday night.

After picking up an alert on a Facebook group he dashed outside to photograph the Aurora Borealis with nothing more sophisticated than a DSLR camera and a tripod.

“I thought if I go out there and do some long exposure I might get it,” the 34-year-old said.

“It was just the off-chance to see it was such a high chance in the area so I thought I’d try my luck.”

After taking the pictures Mr Hunter superimposed several on top of each other to come up with the finished article.

He said there were around 150 pictures involved.

While he has tried to capture the Lights before he admitted this was the first time he had been successful and was pleased with the results.

“I’ve got a Facebook group I put all my astrophotography on and I have had some good feedback,” he said.
