An online auction launched in memory of Ipswich Town and England legend Sir Bobby Robson has raised more than £160,000 for charity.

Bidding for the 160 prizes and once-in-a-lifetime experiences closes at 11pm, with some of those involved gathering at Hall Farm in Fornham St Martin, near Bury St Edmunds, to watch the finale.

Items were donations by the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Wayne Rooney, Jose Mourinho and FIFA.

Some of the biggest lots included VIP tickets for the World Championship Snooker finals which sold for £5,200; a Red Arrows VIP experience selling at £1,900; a chance to watch Tottenham train and have lunch with Ledley King at £5,200; a behind-the-scenes tour with Alan Brazil and talkSPORT at £3,450 and the opportunity to record a single at a renowned music studio was taken up for £1,500.

This year’s auction will support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the League Managers’ Association Charity, the GeeWizz charitable foundation and West Suffolk Hospital Charity.

Since its launch four years ago, Sir Bobby’s Online Auction has raised £866,000, which stood at 9.30pm last night, for different causes following the death of the former Ipswich Town and England manager in 2009 from cancer.

It was the brainchild of Gina Long, a Suffolk-based charity campaigner and friend of the Robson family for 35 years.

She said: “Sir Bobby was a colossal global figure in football and the love and respect people still have for him has been reflected in the unbelievable money-can’t-buy prizes that we have been fortunate to receive.

“Everyone has been so generous in donating amazing prizes from the world of sport, celebrity and lifestyle. Whether bidding or helping to spread the word, I cannot thank everyone enough for their support in making this auction a fitting tribute to this amazing man.”
