National Poetry Day falls on Thursday, September 28, this year. The day is an annual celebration that inspires people throughout the UK to enjoy, discover and share poems.

According to the National Poetry Day organisation sales of poetry books are up by 10% since January, compared to the same period last year.

The organisation wants to encourage people to log into social media and post their favourite lines of poetry using #nationalpoetryday.

Famous Poets, John Cooper Clarke and Kate Tempest are celebrating the day by taking part in some of the events being run by a number of organisations, including the Arts Council England, BBC, and Hull UK City of Culture.

National Poetry Day was founded in 1994 by William Sieghart and has managed to engage millions of people across the country to listen, read and write poetry.

From 1999 National Poetry Day has had a theme – this year the theme is Freedom.
