All Saints Hotel, in Fornham St Genevieve on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds, has submitted a planning application to St Edmundsbury Borough Council to extend its existing building.

The hotel, formerly The Suffolk Golf and Spa Hotel, also hosts weddings and other functions and boasts a restaurant, gym and treatment rooms.

Applicants M&D Developments acquired the site in October 2015 and say the multi-million pound extension could provide around 25 new jobs.

The company specialises in developing buildings and its previous projects include the nearby Tudor mansion Hengrave Hall.

David Harris, chief executive of the company, said: “We acquired the site three years ago and we have been expanding and improving it since then - the restaurant, the wedding facility, the golf course, the spa, the gym.

“We think this 42-room extension takes us to where we want to be.

“We hope the planners will see it as natural growth.

“The new wing will have a knock-on effect throughout the whole hotel and could bring in 25 extra people.

“You’ve only got to look at the great events hosted in Bury, like the food and drink festival and Christmas fayre for example, that bring people in.

“Bury’s a very special place.

“But it’s very much about the team we have here who are committed to providing great hospitality – and that is very important to us.”

Michael Collier, chairman of Fornham St Martin cum Genevieve Parish Council, said he had not yet seen the application but believed the parish council would have few concerns.

“We generally welcome the development that has gone on there because it clearly brings work to the village,” he said.

“It has also really improved something which was looking very down and out.

“Obviously they feel it’s worthwhile to spend the money to extend it.

“I don’t think we will have any concerns.”

A spokesman for St Edmundsbury Borough Council said the application is expected to be heard in November.
