SHADOW home secretary David Davis shocked his party and Westminster today with a decision that he is to quit immediately as an MP.Mr Davis was in the vanguard of the Tories failed bid to defeat Government plans for 42-day detention without charge for terror suspects.

SHADOW home secretary David Davis shocked his party and Westminster today with a decision that he is to quit immediately as an MP.

Mr Davis was in the vanguard of the Tories failed bid to defeat Government plans for 42-day detention without charge for terror suspects.

One of the shadow cabinet's most effective operators, he was runner up to David Cameron for the party leadership in 2005.
