THE Essex MP who spearheaded the campaign to depose Michael Martin as Commons Speaker claimed �655 in his expenses for a love seat, it emerged today.

Tory Douglas Carswell, the MP for Harwich, made the claim for a “Maximus” seat in deep moss brushed cotton with extra fabric protection for his �350,000 constituency home in Thorpe-le-Soken.

Meanwhile Sir Michael Lord, the Deputy Commons Speaker and MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, claimed more than �8,000 over five years for his garden.

Before he entered Parliament, Sir Michael was a tree expert and gave lectures about trees.
