RUSH hour traffic in Ipswich came to a stand still earlier this afternoon after a car crashed into a lorry.

The accident happened at about 5pm on Nacton Road near Ravenswood when a Ford Escort estate collided with the back of a blue Scania articulated lorry.

Emergency services were called to the scene where a 60-year-old male was found to be very shaken up.

Police said the lorry appeared to be stuck under a bridge and the crash totally blocked the road for an hour and a half.

One person was detained by officers at the scene for driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Paramedics assessed the elderly man at the scene but did not need to take him to hospital. The road was reopened at about 6.30pm

Further traffic delays and disruption at the time was caused by a build up of traffic after Operation Stack being implemented earlier in the day.

Police said Operation Stack had come into force due to the bad weather and foggy conditions.
