A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance after the Orwell Bridge was closed for more than four hours yesterday.

Both carriageways of the A14 near Ipswich re-opened around 9.30pm on Saturday, police said, several hours after officers first closed it.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Suffolk police said: "The A14 road has now reopened between the Nacton and Wherstead slip roads, (junctions 56 and 57) after emergency services responded to an incident.

"Police were called to the scene at 4:50pm on Saturday, August 7, and the road was closed for more than four hours, re-opening at around 9:30pm.

"Following the incident, a man in 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance. He has been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre where he will be questioned by officers."

Ambulance, lifeboat and coastguard crews were also sent to the scene shortly after 5.30pm on Saturday.

Motorists - including many travelling home over the bridge from Ipswich Town's home game against Morecambe - were stuck in long delays while police dealt with the incident.

Shortly before 9pm, police said they were turning trapped drivers around.

Major town routes, such as Star Lane and Wherstead Road, were also gridlocked.

A separate crash, which was not thought to be serious but required a clean-up operation, also created disruption.

Pictures on social media showed drivers getting out of their cars in standstill traffic.
