Condolences are being paid to a pedestrian who died following a collision with a lorry on the A11 at Barton Mills.

The accident in the early hours of today, Friday, June 7, happened on the northbound carriageway between Mildenhall and Red Lodge.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said a pedestrian, a man in his 30s, died at the scene and next of kin had been made aware.

Officers were called at about 3.50am and the northbound carriageway was closed for several hours to allow an investigation into the collision to take place.

Councillor Brian Harvey, chair of West Suffolk Council and whose ward includes Barton Mills, said: "My condolences go to the family, but I must stress I have no knowledge of causes or who's been killed.

"It's very much tragic regardless of what the circumstances are."

He said improvements to the A11 Fiveways roundabout at Mildenhall had "dramatically" helped tackle congestion, but a bypass was needed to deal with traffic coming from London.

He said: "What it's meant is the traffic from Mildenhall, particularly at rush-hour times, can get out otherwise the whole of Mildenhall would close down as vehicles tried to get onto the Fiveways roundabout. It is helping that no end."

However, he said Barton Mills was the "pinch point" for traffic from London on a Friday, including workers and holidaymakers.

The work to Fiveways at the end of last year included installing traffic lights to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The speed limit approaching the roundabout was reduced to 50mph from the A11, the A1101, and the A1065, while the A11 southbound exit had its speed limit reduced to 40mph for the first 600 metres of the dual carriageway.

Police, the ambulance service and air ambulance were all sent to the scene of today's crash.

An ambulance spokesman said: "We were called at 3.54am with reports of a collision on the A11 in Barton Mills.

"We sent two ambulances, an ambulance officer and East Anglian Air Ambulance.

"Sadly despite our best efforts one man died at the scene."

The northbound carriageway was closed from the B1085 at Red Lodge to the A1101 Five Ways Roundabout until midday while investigations were carried out.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anybody who may have any relevant dash-cam footage are asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101 quoting CAD 24 of today, 7 June.
