A WOMAN has died after her car was left stranded in the path of an oncoming train at a level crossing.
The tragedy saw the 30-year-old's Rover involved in a collision with a Ford Transit Van as she drove across the icy crossing, leaving her stranded as the barriers came down.
The accident happened just before 9am this morning in South Drove near Spalding.
Lincolnshire Police said the woman made frantic attempts to get off the crossing but ice prevented her escape. The van driver managed to steer off the crossing and he, along with a passenger, then tried to reach the woman before she died.
The train was not derailed and suffered only minor damage.
An investigation has been launched.
