Two people were found dead on the rail tracks between Hackney Wick and Stratford in the early hours of this morning.

According to a spokesman for the British Transport Police, officers were first called at 1pm to reports of a casualty on the rails.

They said the person was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering serious injuries ‘consistent with electrocution’.

At 2.31am BTP officers were called to reports of a second casualty on the tracks close to Stratford Railway Station.

A spokesman said the person was also pronounced dead at the scene having sustained electrocution injuries.

She said: “Shortly after 1am this morning (March 21) British Transport Police were called to the line between Hackney Wick and Stratford following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Officers attended the scene, alongside colleagues from the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service, however a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining serious injuries consistent with electrocution.

“At 2.31am this morning (March 21) BTP officers were called to reports of a second casualty on the tracks on the line close to Stratford.

“Sadly, the person was also declared dead at the scene after sustaining serious injuries consistent with electrocution.

“Officers remain at the scene where they are working to identify the deceased and inform their families.

“A number of enquiries are also underway to establish the circumstances of how the people came to be on the tracks.”

DCI Tim Tubbs from British Transport Police said: “An investigation is now underway to discover what happened and how these two people came to lose their lives on the railway.

“At this time we are treating their deaths as unexplained as we make a number of urgent enquiries.

“I would ask anyone who was near Stratford or Hackney Wick last night, and saw something which they think might be relevant to contact us as soon as possible.”

Rail services through stations including Ipswich, Manningtree, Colchester and Clacton were disrupted this morning as a result of the incident at Stratford.

Greater Anglia is warning that services running through stations in Suffolk and Essex may be cancelled, delayed by up to ten minutes or revised, with disruption expected until 10am today.

7.49 Chelmsford to Liverpool Street

8.58 Colchester Town to Liverpool Street

Greater Anglia has also confirmed alterations to the following services:

5.52 Liverpool Street to Hertford East will not call at Stratford and Lea Bridge

6.47 Clacton to Liverpool Street will additionally call at Chelmsford

6.52 Ipswich to Liverpool Street will additionally call at Witham, Hatfield Peverel and Shenfield

7.26 Braintree to Liverpool Street calls additionally at Ingatestone and Shenfield

A Greater Anglia spokesman has since said all lines have reopened although the cancellations and service alternations still stand.
