The incident initially took place in Arderne Close, Harwich, when a Peugeot car was reported stolen to Essex Police at 2am on Tuesday.
There are severe delays on the A12 this evening because of an overturned car.
The incident happened on the London-bound Eight Ash Green (J26) entry slip road at about 7.40pm.
Two lanes of the road are closed while recovery work takes place.
Congestion on the London-bound carriageway is stretching back to J28 for Colchester United Footbal Club.
