About eight caravans moved onto the perimeter of Eight Ash Green Cricket Club, on the outskirts of Colchester, on Friday.

The club was forced to cancel a second team home fixture against West Mersea, in the Two Counties Cricket Championship, on Saturday.

The travellers, understood to have used the club’s water pump during their stay, were served with a 48-hour enforcement notice to move on by council staff.

Club secretary, Neil Brinded received an email from authorities on Monday afternoon, informing him the travellers had gone.

He said there had been no direct contact between the club and those camped around the pitch, and that all communication had gone through the parish council.

A group of volunteers were scheduled to clean up rubbish and assess any damage left behind on Tuesday morning.
