Tributes have been paid to a popular AFC Sudbury club stalwart who died suddenly this week.

Tony Simpson, who wrote reports for the club under the pseudonym YNOT, was on his way home from a game of golf on Thursday when he suffered a heart attack.

A minute’s applause will be held at the club’s pre-season friendly against Braintree Town on Tuesday night.

Tributes have poured in via social media from across the non-league football spectrum and beyond.

A statement posted yesterday on the AFC Sudbury website from chairman Philip Turner read: “It is with great sorrow and shock that I have to advise everyone at the club that Tony Simpson passed away yesterday following a heart attack on the way home from golf.

“Tony will be greatly missed by everyone at the club and all those who knew him through football.

“The family has insisted that tomorrows game against Harlow goes ahead.

“On Tuesday night before the AFC Sudbury match against Braintree Town there will be a minutes applause before kick off as a show of our respect for this great clubman.

“I am sure you all join me in offering our condolences to Tony’s family and you will help us support them in any way we can.”

Former AFC Sudbury manager Jamie Godbold tweeted: “Awful news. Condolences to Tony’s family and all connected with AFC Sudbury. Thoughts are with you all. #RIP A true gent.”

Former player Shane Wardley said on Twitter: “Sad news, a true gent, thoughts are with the family. RIP.”

Another former AFC Sudbury player, Craig Parker, tweeted: “Terrible news, such a lovely man. Send my condolences to Tony’s family. RIP.”

Former club goalkeeper Ben Nower said: “Absolutely gutted to hear this, such sad news and can’t quite believe it.

“Such a top bloke, the fact he made the effort to come and watch my last game of the season just a few weeks ago sums him up.

“Sincere condolences to all his family and friends, he will be missed #RIP.”

Former striker James Rowe added: “Very sad news to read. Second to none in passion for his football club. My thoughts are with Tony’s family and all connected with AFC Sudbury. Rest in Peace Tony.”
