A STAR of BBC television's Blue Peter, visited Lowestoft to officially open the town's new-look library.

Konnie Huq, joined school children and guests to see the library's new hi-tech facilities unveiled following a £1.4 million refurbishment.

During her visit Konnie met pupils from Denes High School, Kirkley High School and Benjamin Britten High School who helped select books for the new teenage section of the library.

Konnie Huq, said: "It is a lovely building, so full of colour and light, when I was younger I would have loved something like this.

She added: "It is particularly important that young people and children have places like this to come to socialise and learn. The young people from local schools who I have spoken to have told me how good they think this place is for them."

Kathy Pollard, member of Suffolk County Council's executive, said: "The new Lowestoft library is a flagship for Suffolk offering up-to-the-minute services in an innovative environment. The library is fully re-open now and I hope people who have never visited before will come and take a look to see what it can offer them."

Jane Hore, Leader of Suffolk County Council and county councillor for Lowestoft central, said: "The new library is a fantastic new social building for Lowestoft which I hope will become a focal point for the whole community. Customers, old and new, are already telling us that it provides a welcoming place to meet friends, to learn and to relax."

The library now boasts 65 free-access computers and an online learning centre. There is also a re-vamped children's library, a toy library, a section for teenagers and purpose built research facilities.
